This medal commemorates the honorable discharge of Franklin T. Boyd from United States Volunteer Service with the 2nd West Virginia Veteran Volunteers.  A patriotic ribbon is fastened to a bar on the reverse of the pin base.  Slight fading is noted across the ribbon but it remains complete and in good condition.  The pin bar design is a stylized “WV”, which connects to a banner reading “Honorably Discharged”.  The drop medal features a volunteer soldier receiving laurel and accolade from a conceptualized Lady Liberty. Beneath is the Great Seal of the State of West Virginia, with the years 1861-1865 on either side. The reverse relief reads “PRESENTED BY THE STATE OF WEST VIRGINIA” and the edge is stamped “FRANKLIN T. BOYD CO. C, 2nd REG VET INF VOLS.” Overall measurements are 3.2” x 1.6”.

Frank Boyd likely hailed from one of the small river communities along the Ohio River when he enlisted, though available records do not specify his place of residence or age at time of enlistment. He mustered out on July 16th, 1865 with the regiment.  Frank was something of an oddity in 1860’s America when he enlisted and mustered into Company K of the 4th West Virginia on June 1st, 1861 – a Unionist fighting man without a home state.  West Virginia would not elect to leave the Confederacy to join the Union as a breakaway state until June 20th, 1863 – but sent over 32,000 men to fill the US ranks from 1861-1865.

The 4th West Virginia Infantry Regiment was mustered into Federal service on June 17, 1861, at Grafton, Point Pleasant, and Mason City, Virginia. It was recruited primarily in Ohio from the counties of Meigs, Gallia, Lawrence and Athens, which contributed seven full companies. Among its early recruits was future United States Congressman John L. Vance, who would rise to the rank of lieutenant colonel. The regiment fought in the Kanawha Valley Campaign of 1862 as part of a brigade commanded by Colonel Samuel A. Gilbert, seeing action at Fayetteville (WV) and Charleston (WV).  From there, the regiment was sent West, where it fought from Vicksburg through Missionary Ridge.  The regiment's re-enlisting veterans were consolidated with the 1st West Virginia Infantry Regiment (3 Year) on December 21, 1864, to form the 2nd West Virginia Veteran Infantry Regiment.  The 2nd saw limited action against partisans in Western Maryland before mustering out, losing 17 men to wounds and disease, while the old 4th West Virginia lost 241 men during its 3-year term of service.

A rare piece of one of the many nuances and facets of the Civil War.  An artifact of a rebellion within a rebellion.  [cm] [ph:L]
