This medal was presented to West Virginia Volunteer Veteran Frank Converse to mark his honorable discharge from Federal Volunteer military service. It comes in the original box, which is labeled in pencil across the top “Frank Converse / F Co. / 1st Vet Infty”. Two sides are also labeled, one in ink reading “Converse 1 Vet” and the other in pencil reading “Converse”.  Both halves of the box are complete, but each of the four corners of the lower half are separated.  The box is enclosed in the original wax bag.  The medal itself is in excellent condition, with only light surface dirt/dust and no signs of having been worn.  Light darkening of the ribbon’s vertical white portion is noted – caused by years in its box while resting against a bronzed drop medal.  Otherwise, no fraying or damage is noted.  A stylized “WV” gives way to a scroll reading “HONORABLY DISCHARGED” to form the base pin piece.  A single link suspends the drop medal, with features a volunteer soldier being presented with a formal accolade and laurel by lady liberty and an onlooking eagle.  The Great Seal of the State of West Virginia appears below on a shield, flanked by the years 1861 and 1865 and the state motto “Montani Semper Liberi” (Mountaineers are Always Free) appears on a banner at bottom.  The edge of the medal is stamped “FRANK CONVERSE Co. F 1st REG VET INF VOLS”.  The reverse features a relief of a laurel, surrounding the text “PRESENTED BY THE STATE OF WEST VIRGINIA”.  Overall dimensions are 1.2” x 3”.

Frank Converse enlisted on 12/1/1861 as a Drummer and mustered into Company F of the 9th West Virginia Infantry. A lively regiment, the unit participated in the Skirmish at Guyandotte, Battle of Charleston (1862), Battle of Buffington Island, George Crook's Raid, Battle of Cloyd's Mountain, David Hunter's Raid, Battle of Opequon, Battle of Fisher's Hill, and the Battle of Cedar Creek.

Frank enlisted once again on 11/9/1864 as a Drummer in Company F of the 1st West Virginia Veteran Volunteer Infantry Regiment. It was mustered into Federal service on November 9, 1864, composed of re-enlisting veterans from the 5th and the 9th West Virginia Volunteer Infantry Regiments – whose first terms of enlistment had expired.  After serving at Beverly, WV and Cumberland, MD, the regiment was mustered out of Federal service on July 21, 1865. Its lineage went on to be part of the 150th Cavalry Regiment in the modern-day West Virginia National Guard.

A neat and rare piece of West Virginia’s earliest military legacy.  [cm][ph:L]
