This lovely badge was given to members and staff of the delegation of the Pennsylvania State Legislature who attended the dedication of Grant’s Tomb in New York City on April 27, 1897.
The ribbon badge is in a nice condition, with only minor wear to the upper portion of the ribbon – immediately below the brooch. The brooch itself is a celluloid “PENNSYLVANIA” with gilt brass frame over a copper body. A patent stamp reads “PAT. OCT 18. 92”. A manufacturer’s tag is glued to the reverse near the bottom and reads “J. H. Shaw Co. / No. 1330 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, Pa., / Manufacturer of / Badges, Buttons, Portraits, Banners and Flags.”
Front features gold state seal and text, three-dimensional “waving” flag, and complete wire fringe. A drop medal hangs from the attached flag and features a relief of Riverside Park and Grant’s Tomb on one side, with the other showing a high relief of General Grant. No fraying is noted along the edges and the ribbon remains firmly stitched to the ribbon bar of the brooch. Dimensions are 3” x 9.6” (including fringe).
Sure to be a wonderful addition to any Civil War Veteran or General Grant collection. [sr][ph:L]
