This striking ribbon commemorates the 8th reunion of the 144th New York Infantry. The ribbon is blue silk, with brilliant embossed gold text and top border patterning. Some of the gilt has rubbed in a small area at top right, but the presentation is largely unaffected. Very minor fraying is noted at the bottom corners. The reverse is blank, with the top edge folded and stitched over a one-piece bar with vertical stick pin. An original Whitehead and Hoag manufacturer’s tag in very good condition remains attached at the low edge. Dimensions are 1.3” x 6”.
The 144th New York served on the coasts of Virginia and South Carolina during the Civil War. They were heavily involved in the siege operations against Charleston, and the military actions near Hilton Head Island. During service on Folly Island, the regiment’s water supply was contaminated and resulted in several hundred men falling ill (many fatally) with Typhoid Fever and Chronic Diarrhea. The army established a hospital for the regiment near St. Augustine due to the high number of diseased men needing medical care.
An uncommon and handsome ribbon that would display beautifully. [cm][ph:L]
