This rare ribbon is linked to one of the most famous artillery units to fight at Gettysburg – Rickett’s Battery – known for bearing the brunt of the Confederate assault on East Cemetery Hill. The First Pennsylvania Batteries operated independently and as part of the Artillery Reserve of the Army of the Potomac. Batteries F and G resorted to hand-to-hand combat until US reinforcements secured the hilltop after dark on July 2nd.
The ribbon is made of crimson silk, with embossed silvered text and trefoil at center. The silver accenting has mostly worn away, with a few letters still highlighted. Everything remains perfectly legible. Very light fraying is noted at the top and bottom edges. The reverse is blank and clean, save for one small, white stain at the lower right edge. Dimensions are 1.1” x 6”.
An uncommon reunion badge, attributed to a famous Gettysburg unit. A must-have for the Gettysburg or Civil War Veterans collector. [cm][ph:L]
