Two-piece brass souvenir badge from the 1917 Peace Jubilee, a joint gathering of Union and Confederate veterans held at Vicksburg October 16-18, attended by an estimated 8-10,000 veterans in the wake of the country’s entry into World War One. Pinback top bar, in an arc with foliate decoration, “SOUVENIR” in large, raised letters. The badge itself is stamped brass with plain back and the face made to represent canteen suspended by a cord from a loop in the top bar. The canteen has a bird with upraised wings in a wreath at center in relief, carried a small olive branch in its beak. The raised wings and tail feathers have suggested a conventional martial eagle to many, but we venture to suggest that in this context it is a dove arriving with the announcement of peace. In raised letters at top the badge reads, “FEDERAL & CONFEDERATE / PEACE / JUBILEE,” and at bottom, “VICKSBURG OCT. 1917.”
The gathering had first been planned for 1915, with the UCV participating and formation of a “National Association of Vicksburg Veterans,” but the war in Europe made the US government hesitate to allocate funds, and it was not until 1916 that plans were revived with federal funds appropriated for the “National Memorial Reunion and Peace Jubilee,” and various states contributing money for transportation of their own veterans. Needless to say, there was a good deal of importance attached to such displays of sectional reconciliation since the US had officially joined the allies declared war on Germany in April 1917.
The canteen was a favored emblem of comradeship among veterans, with “we drank from the same canteen,” a recurring motto. This was then extended to envision even enemies aiding the helpless wounded and suggest, with greater or lesser success, a comradeship among participants on both sides created by their shared suffering and experience of battle.
