A piece of black silk mourning ribbon with printed paper label showing a vignetted bust view of Grant in uniform, surrounded by stars, US shields and flags at left with a short biography at right captioned at top “Souvenir of U.S. Grant,” and with a four-line funereal poem at bottom. This notes that he “died July 23, 1885 at Mt. McGregor, N.Y. / Entombed at Riverside Park N.Y. City, Aug. 8, 1885.” and has an 1885 copyright notice on the lower left border, and publisher’s notice at bottom right: “Pubd. By Geo. A. Snow 19 Park Place, N.Y.” An 1886 NY City directory shows Snow at this address as a publisher, but with the note that his home was in Newark, NJ. We find little else on him. The implication, of course, is that this ribbon was a piece of black mourning ribbon used at the funeral ceremonies. Whether that was the case, or a bit of salesmanship by Snow, we don’t know, but it certainly merits a place in a collection of material related to Grant in the popular culture of the day.
