The item is brass cut. The top bar has a clasp that reads ‘REPRESENTATIVE/ G A R’. A coin with an eagle grasping laurel branches is suspended from the top bar. The coin reads (clockwise) ‘60TH NATIONAL/ 1926/ ENCAMPMENT/ DESMOINES.’ The Iowa state seal is in the center of the coin.
A faded yellow ribbon is also suspended from the top bar and another gold coin is attached at the bottom. Portions of the ribbon that were not exposed to light, such as behind the coins, the yellow coloring is bright. The bottom coin reads ‘COMMANDER IN CHIEF’ with the acting GAR Commander-In-Chief, John B. Inman’s, image in the center.
The entire badge from top bar to coin bottom measures 4 ½”.
Pvt. John B. Inman was a drummer boy enlisted in Company I, 4th Minnesota Infantry towards the end of the war. In 1925 he was elected Commander-In-Chief of the GAR.
This a unique, intricate addition to any collector who wants to preserve the legacy of past Union service members via the GAR. [MK] [ph:L]
