The item is brass cut. The top bar has a clasp with an eagle grasping two cross cannons. In the eagle’s talons is a saber. Suspended from the eagle is a plate that reads “REPRESENTATIVE” with “GAR” spaced underneath. The next piece is a hanging shield that has Maine’s “Our Lady of Victory” monument with “63rd/ NATIONAL/ ENCAMPMENT” on the left and “SEPTEMBER/ 1929” on the right. The final medallion has the image of John Reese, with the writing (clockwise) “JOHN REESE COMMANDER IN CHIEF G.A.R”.
On the reverse, each medallion has the manufacturer, Bastian Bros. Co., company seal. The last medallion’s backing reads “63rd NATIONAL/ ENCAMPMENT/ GRAND ARMY OF/ THE REPUBLIC/ PORTLAND MAINE/ SEPT. 8-13/ 1929”.
There are two ribbons suspended from the top bar. The top ribbon, is extremely fragile, discolored yellow, and is frayed in various spots. The bottom ribbon is red, white, and blue, with yellowing at the bottom. It too, is very fragile and frayed at the bottom. The entire badge measures 5 ¼”.
John Reese served one year during the Civil War with Company A, 113th Ohio Infantry. He held land offices under both the Roosevelt and Taft administrations. He served as Commander-in- Chief for the GAR in 1928.
This a unique, intricate addition to any collector who wants to preserve the legacy of past Union service members via the GAR. [MK] [ph:L]
