M.C. Lilley of Columbus, Ohio produced this well-made four pocket vest; the black and gold label is present albeit with a small tear. The vest is made of a navy-blue broadcloth with six GAR cuff buttons down the front with a nice watch chain attached. The watch chain is intact with the clasps in working order. There is a small nickel sized token with the logo of the GAR as well as a wreath. It reads “Grand Army of the Republic Veteran.” There is also a worn half-dime dated 1841 attached as well, which could possibly denote the year of birth of the wearer. The pockets are lined with no holes and remain strong. Three pockets are lined in a sturdy canvas; the lower lefthand watch pocket has been lined in a plush felt. There is only one tiny moth nip to note above the upper left-hand pocket; a small wear mark also exists between the two right-hand pockets.

The lining of the vest is constructed of lightweight cotton ticking. Although this vest is quite well made, it is clear that it has also been well-worn considering the unmistakable sweat marks in the back, near the underarms, and on the front near the inside pocket.

The back of the vest made of black cotton which is densely woven and gives the piece some nice durability. All seams appear to be strong and intact with the exception of one minor wear mark near the right armpit. The back waist cinch is also present and the buckle is firmly in place. We can see some wrinkles in the back from frequent wear. There is also wear, some minor pilling and fraying, at the collar.

Overall, this is a great piece of GAR history in nice condition with a couple doo-dads to give it a little extra pizazz!  [cla] [ph:L]
