The US Signal Corps was integral to the Union’s Civil War victory by facilitating communication between commanders and troops. The Corps used a system of flags, flares, and torches to transmit messages, and relied on telegraph for more long-distance communication.  Due to their enlistment numbers relative to the rest of the Army, their specific GAR items are increasingly difficult to find and collect.

This badge features a purple ribbon and medallion with brass insert.  The ribbon reads “U.S. SIGNAL CORPS” in gold and is missing its accompanying pin.  A small piece of adhesive velcro remains affixed near the top fold.  The medallion has a patriotic border motif with two vignettes of Cleveland GAR sites – the great Soldiers and Sailors Hall and Monument. Border text reads “35th NAT’L ENCAMPMENT/G.A.R.” within the borders of a decorative banner relief. A brass coin is pressed into the center and features the Ohio State Seal, a patriotic shield, and Federal Eagle. The reverse of the coin is stamped “SCHWAAB S. & S. CO. MILWAUKEE”.

A rare Signal Corps veteran item from the massive 1901 GAR National Encampment – a veritable necessity for the Grand Army of the Republic and/or Civil War collector.  [cm][ph:L]
