From June 17th – 21st, 1912, The Department of Ohio of the Grand Army of the Republic held its annual encampment in Springfield, Ohio. The Department of Ohio, Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) was the state-level branch of the national GAR organization, the most-prominent and influential fraternal association of Union veterans of the Civil War. It played a significant role in Ohio's political and social landscape, particularly in advocating for veterans' rights and establishing soldiers' homes.
This two-piece badge is in good condition with few imperfections. The pin piece features a gold finished wreath, a texted banner, GAR membership badge relief, and crossed flags. The hanging medallion is comprised of a shielded motif with relief-style depictions of General George Rogers Clark and three landmarks in Springfield. The red, silk ribbon that was once attached is mostly missing, with only the folded top portion remaining. A worn banner of gold text is still visible at the top of the ribbon portion, perhaps a former identification. A casting logo on both pieces reads “THE WHITEHEAD & HOAG CO. NEWARK, N. J.”
A very nice GAR piece from the great State of Ohio. A great addition to any GAR or Civil War collection. [cm][ph:L]
