This is scarce Grand Army of the Republic officer’s medal with the flag ribbon bordered in buff, indicating a national officer, rank bar bearing a silver eagle on dark background indicating a staff officer, likely the Assistant Adjutant General or an aide de camp, with the ribbon in the top position indicating it was an office held office held by the wearer at the time.
The brass has some gilt left on it. The flag ribbon is complete but somewhat faded. The star has the insignia of Hancock’s, Sheridan’s and Wilson’s corps on the reverse points, indicating it is the 1886 Type-5 pattern. The background of the top bar is somewhat faded and but the eagle retains most of its silvering. Dimensions are 1.9” x 3.75”. [cm][ph:L]
