Union veterans’ hats and caps were clearly modelled on their wartime ancestors and the insignia followed suit, with hat insignia evoking the US staff wreath, with the wreath embroidered in gold and the letters GAR substituted for US and embroidered in silver. In this case a number “1” was added at the top indicating the wearer’s membership in a G.A.R. Post #1, though without indicating the state. The low number though, in any case, would have been a matter of pride to the wearer.

Collectors will be familiar with the history of the Grand Army of the Republic, the largest organization of Union veterans, established in 1866 and dissolved only in 1956 with the death of its last member. It reached a peak membership of over 400,000 in 1890 and was a powerful political force and voice in veterans’ affairs, particularly in the matter of pensions, the establishment of Memorial Day, etc.

This is in good condition, with just some dust, a couple of pinprick holes, a mellow patina and some very thin tarnish just on the very tips of the wreath leaves. The stitching around the back is good, showing also some loose threads from attachment to a hat or cap, and a short, narrow run to the blue fabric covering the back.

This would make a nice addition to a collection a G.A.R. material, which is interesting for both its military and social history.    [sr][ph:m/L]
