This form of G.A.R. badge, with several changes over the years, was introduced in 1882. This one appears to have a Type-Iva bar and medal. The ribbon has a colored red border to mark an officer serving at the department (state) level. In this case the rank bar is positioned to indicate a past office, the silver-finished leaf indicating an assistant inspector general or aide-de-camp to a department commander at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
Condition is good overall, with light tarnishing of the bar and drop medal. Ribbon is complete and securely attached with no overt wear or damage. The shoulder strap bar is complete and retains the silver finish on each leaf. Dimensions are 1.9” x 3.7”. Numbered along the edge but difficult to make out.
An uncommonly found type of Grand Army of the Republic Medal – ideal for the collector. [cm][ph:L]
