This white bullion embroidered belt uses a Civil War M1851 officer’s sword belt plate and hasp. Chances are that it was worn by an officer in the G.A.R., the largest and best known of the Civil War veterans’ organizations. The plate is wartime, using the integral wreath of the commercially produced, higher quality, plates purchased by officers and still retains a lot of its gilt finish on the low-lying portions with the raised edges of the frame and upper edges of the eagle’s wings showing expected rubbing and now showing as a muted, aged brass. The wreath likely had a thin silver wash, thin and almost always worn off on officer’s plates, with the wreath also a toned brass with just a small spot of verdigris at upper right.

G.A.R. belts were white and, if we are correct about the organization using it, the use of embroidered bullion on this one, though with wartime rather than standard G.A.R. buckle, likely indicates wear by an officer at the post or higher level. The embroidery was attached to an underlying leather belt that shows wear, losses and some missing sections. This is often the case with higher grade leathers that do not age well. In any case, the exterior embroidered belt has held it together though itself showing one sewn repair, that blends in well. The embroidery shows some soiling but is generally very good. The tightening slide loops are there as is the brass wire adjusting buckle and the belt plate itself is very attractive with the reddish-brown leather safe intact and in place behind it, setting it off nicely in display.  [sr] [ph:L]
