This very rare miniature souvenir knapsack was produced for the September 12, 1888 National Grand Army of the Republic encampment at Columbus, Ohio.
Made of lacquered/japanned tin, brass, and felt; the piece was crafted in the style of a martial knapsack with blanket roll, a plate reading “N.D.”, and crossed rifle insignia at the top (probably a surplus m1874 hat/cap insignia). Dimensions are 1.15”x 3.15”. Piece is accompanied by a descriptive card, with hand-written note reading “COLUMBUS – OHIO – 22nd National Encampment – GRAND ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC, September 12, 1888. (Souvenir).
An interesting item for the GAR or broader Civil War veteran collector. [cm][ph:L]
