This Kepi was manufactured by the famed Horstman and Sons military contracting and manufacturing firm of Philadelphia and rebranded by “GREENWALD AND CO. / HATTERS / TOPEKA, KANSAS” on the Moroccan sweat band in silvered text.
The integrity of the cap is sound, with complete stitching and securely attached accessories including the patent leather visor, chinstrap and buttons, polished cotton lining, and “167” in small, separate block numbers. Roughly half of the sweatband stitching is severed, with some small whip stitch repairs to the left and front areas. A few small moth holes are noted in the broadcloth behind the chinstrap, along with some very light discoloration where the fabric rests and folds over the rigid interior sweatband. Light but typical cracking is noted on each side of the leather-bound visor. Interior dimensions at the sweatband are 6.25” x 8.25” with a 5” disc.
A neat, partially-identified remnant of the Grand Army of the Republic. [cm][ph:L]
