In 1912, Los Angeles hosted the 46th National Encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR), the major Union Civil War veterans' organization, from September 9-14, drawing about 190,000 members and featuring parades, official proceedings, and souvenir badges, showcasing the GAR's enduring presence and camaraderie as it preserved the memory of the Union cause.
Measuring 3" high by 1 1/2" across at its widest point, this souvenir badge is in excellent condition.
Los Angeles’ occupied an important place in post-war history as Civil War Veterans manifested their destiny in the far West, making this an ideal piece for the GAR collector. [cm][ph:L]
