Top bar has pin on back while face is inscribed “Post 10 GAR.” Suspended from this bar is a red, white and blue ribbon with “ASSOCIATE” written across its face in gold. From this ribbon hangs a round medal. The obverse has two men shaking hands at center surrounded by the inscription “We Stand By Those Who Stood By Us.” Reverse is blank. Medal is in very good condition.

Post #10 was named in honor of Sgt. William Rankin of the 14th Brooklyn who was killed in action on May 8, 1864 at the Battle of Laurel Hill that was part of the Spotsylvania Campaign. William Rankin had enlisted as a Private in Company H on April 18, 1861 and rose through the ranks to Sergeant before being killed. [ad] [ph:L]
