This Grand Army of the Republic ribbon was designed and commissioned by Kit Carson GAR Post #2 of Washington, D.C. in honor of the March 4th, 1889 reunion event honoring the Veteran Zouaves of Elizabeth organization.
In January 1867, under Commander James Madison Drake, local veterans of the Civil War were organized into the Veteran Zouaves of Elizabeth. They became a company of the National Guard of New Jersey and were active in the G.A.R. (Grand Army of the Republic). The Veteran Zouaves of Elizabeth, under Drake, were part of Ulysses S. Grant's funeral procession in New York on August 8, 1885. The Veteran Zouaves were among the most traveled ceremonial military units of their time. The “Old Guard” was the parade company of the Department of the Potomac of the Grand Army of the Republic – famous for their decades-long service during National Encampments and parades across the country.
Ribbon badge measures 2.1” x 8.55” with original brass brooch pin. Stitching to pin bar is strong and some very light surface dirt has slightly darkened the silk ribbon. Front features text and Washington Monument design, while reverse is blank and clean. A full stand of wire fringe is retained securely at the bottom edge. [cm][ph:L]
