1911 UCV REUNION MEDAL: LITTLE ROCK, ARKANSAS - PATRICK CLEBURNE

Two-piece bronze medal for the United Confederate Veterans reunion of 1911, held in Little Rock. Top pinback bar in the shape of the state of Arkansas with some incised lines indicating rivers, the dome of the state capitol at center with lines indicating rays of the coming up behind it, just above a crossed Confederate battleflag and third-national CS flag. “21st REUNION” at top and “LITTLE ROCK / MAY. 16-17-18” at bottom, all in small, raised letters. Lower portion in shape of a Maltese cross on a wreath, with “UCV” in raised letters on the upper arms and a portrait bust in relief of General Cleburne at center of a red circle, with “MAJ-GEN / P.R. CLEBURNE / 1911” in raised letters in the bottom arm of the cross. Measures 2-5/8” by 1-1/4” overall.

Both elements have “THE WHITEHEAD & HOAG CO. / NEWARK, N.J.” stamped in small letters on the back. The pin is in place on the top bar, though bent. Mellow bronze tone overall with some small green spots on the tip bar with brown and orange-red on the cross. Scattered losses to the red and white paint of the flags and the circle around the Cleburne bust. Please see our photos.

Cleburne was an appropriate choice for an Arkansas reunion. Born in Ireland in 1825, he emigrated to the US and eventually settled in Helena, Arkansas, and was a pharmacist, ran a newspaper, and practiced law at various points. He threw in his lot with Arkansas and the Confederacy when the war started and made a very good record for himself as a division commander before being killed at Franklin in 1864.  [sr] [ph:L]
