This United Confederate Veterans hat is rather remarkable given its accessories and condition.
A gilded wreath with UCV letters adorns the front of the pinch, attached by its original horizontal pin. Sizable holes are noted in front and rear of the crown at the creases as shown. Signs of obvious use punctuate the item, including sweat staining at the brim’s base and associated soiling of the silk tape hat band. Two bands of machine stitching secure the brim edge and hold matching tape trim to the underside. The brown leather sweat band is tied at the back with silk cording and is largely complete and secure, with the reed showing through the bottom edge in areas with slight material loss (to the leather). No lining is present, and upon cursory and gentle inspection, no evidence of one having been attached is noted.
A badge from the 22nd annual reunion of the UCV, held in Macon, Georgia, is pinned to the right side of the hat and remains in good condition with only light oxidation and surface dirt. The manufacturer’s stamp on the reverse of the drop medal is worn and only partially legible. The felt beneath the hanging drop medal is somewhat cleaner than surrounding areas, suggesting the pin has been attached to the hat for quite some time.
Quite the piece for the collector of UCV memorabilia. [cm][ph:L]
