Gilt brass heart-shaped drop suspended from a pin-back top bar reading “SOUVENIR” in a central rectangular panel with smaller sunburst palmette showing at top and bottom center. The badge reads in raised letters along the top: “UNITED / CONFEDERATE VETERANS / REUNION” over a raised female portrait bust at center labeled “WINNIE DAVIS” underneath, dividing the date “MAY 7-8-9” with scroll accents at either side, and “MACON. GA. / 1912” at bottom. The back has a Schwaab, Milwaukee, maker’s mark in small raised letters. The badge shows bright along the raised edges of the top bar and upper portions of the heart, with some red showing in the upper lines of text and the bottom tip of the drop, with darker tones in the recessed areas. Some minor rubs and scratches. Please see our photos.
“Winnie” Davis was Varina Anne Davis (1864-1898,) sixth and last child of Jefferson Davis. Born in the “Confederate White House, she was very active in Confederate veterans’ affairs and remembrance ceremonies, acquiring the nickname of the “Daughter of the Confederacy,” reportedly at the instigation of Gen. J.B. Gordon, and becoming the inspiration for the United Daughters of the Confederacy, founded in 1894. When she died in 1898 she was buried with military honors in Richmond’s Hollywood Cemetery.
A badge of remembrance honoring of a key figure in Confederate remembrance ceremonies. [sr][ph:m]
