A celluloid pinback button made and marked on the reverse by Shapiro and Karr of Philadelphia for the 1910 UCV reunion at Mobile. The center features a bust portrait of CS general Joseph Johnston, looking a bit younger and more jovial than we are quite used to, but showing the upper portion of his Confederate uniform, captioned in white along the edge: “GEN. JOE.JOHNSON” (sic) at top, and “U.C.V. REUNION MOBILE, ALA. APR.26-29, 1910” along the sides and bottom.
We don’t know if the misspelling of Johnston’s last name impeded sales. Many likely did not notice it until some ways away from the vendor’s table at the reunion. This was the organization’s 20th annual reunion. A large “tented city” was erected to house the veterans, with newspapers touting the luxurious inclusion of bathtubs in the accommodations. [sr][ph:m]
