This pinback badge features a Chicago maker’s address on the reverse and several patent dates from the 1890s. The face is a portrait bust in civilian clothes photo of General Fitzhugh Lee, titled at bottom “GENERAL LEE” with a faded border of white stars on blue along the upper half and red and white stripes on the lower half.

Born in 1835, he was the nephew of Robert E. Lee, graduated West Point in 1856 and served in the cavalry, being wounded in action against Comanches in 1859. An instructor of cavalry tactics at West Point when the war broke out, he resigned, joined the CS Army as a lieutenant and staff officer, made Lieutenant Colonel in the VA cavalry in September 1861 and Brigadier General in July 1862. He earned praise from Jeb Stuart for his abilities and was promoted Major General in August 1863, commanding a cavalry division. After Stuart’s death he was second in command to Wade Hampton, served in the Valley, where he was wounded, and later took over command from Hampton when the latter was sent to North Carolina to join Johnston.

After the war he was Governor of Virginia (1886-1890) and prominent in the United Confederate Veterans, but also held US posts, such as U.S. Consul General in Cuba, and during the Spanish American War was one of the prominent former Confederate officers to enter the US Army, serving as a Major General. The pin, showing him on the background of a U.S. flag thus reflects his role in US sectional reconciliation and the simple title of “General” is nicely ambiguous in reflecting his rank in both the CS and US Army.   [sr][ph:m]
