Two-piece bronze-toned United Confederate Veterans reunion badge for the 1908 annual reunion at Birmingham, Alabama. Whitehead & Hoag maker’s mark on the reverse of top bar and planchet. Top bar is a fan-leaved cross with round center. The upper arm of the cross reads “1908;” the left arm, “JUNE 9 10 11” vertically; the right arm, “BIRMINGHAM;” a foliate knot in the bottom arm. At upper center is a Confederate flag leaning to the right. The fly end is jagged, perhaps intended to show it billowing. There seems to be no delineation of an end stripe, making it a 2nd National, which is unusual. Two oval bust portraits in lower portion labeled “PETTUS” and “MORGAN,” referring to Alabama brigadier generals Edmund Pettus and John Tyler Morgan.

Round planchet with foliate upper edge, suspended by one link. The center continues the Alabama theme, showing the CS raider at sea with, “THE ALABAMA” in small raised letters at bottom. Planchet with “18th REUNION UNITED CONFEDERATE VETERANS.” in raised letters around the edge. Some small spots of verdigris on the top and right arms of the cross, with a fleck on the top edge of the flag and small bit on Morgan’s shoulder. A little bit of white on the ship at the forward mast. Suspension pin in place. A small bit of verdigris at on the reverse upper arm of the cross. An fitting badge for a Birmingham reunion, carrying three allusions to Alabama in its motifs.  [sr][ph:m]
