A very good condition two-piece, gilt brass souvenir UCV medal for the 1924 United Confederate Veterans reunion in Memphis, Tennessee. Top bar is a foliate edged ribbon scroll with “SOUVENIR” in raised letters. The planchet is round with checked edge and profile portrait bust of R.E. Lee, interestingly wearing US generals’ shoulder straps rather the CS collar insignia, with “GEN. R.E. LEE” in small raised letters underneath. The disk reads in raised letters around the edge: “UNITED CONFEDERATE VETERANS REUNION / MEMPHIS, TENN.” with “JUNE 3-6” in raised letters in ribbon scroll at left and “1924” at right of Lee’s head. On the reverse of the top bar the fastening pin is in place. The reverse of the planchet shows three crossed CS flags- the CS battleflag at center, First National at right and Third National at left.

The gilt finish and raised details remain strong, with some staining on the “SO” of “souvenir” and the “O” of Confederate, a small spot on the left edge of the face and minor rubs. Please see our photos. This was the 34th UCV reunion and the third time Memphis had hosted the organization. Newspapers estimated general attendance at 40,000 or more with 6,000 veterans registered by the opening of the reunion, under Commander W.B. Haldeman. Please see our photos.   [sr][ph:m]
