This badge preserves very pleasing bronze tones to the upper and lower sections and very good color to the gilt brass and enameled disk insert. Both sections preserve Schwaab company manufacturer markings on the reverse. There were several UCV national reunions in New Orleans. We believe this to date to the 1903 reunion. The portrait bust on the disk insert seems clearly to be Gen. John B. Gordon, first commander of the UCV, who held the post of National Commander until his death in early 1904.

Some elements of the badge share motifs with GAR badges of the period, like the eagle on crossed cannon on the lower section, the kettle on the campfire at left, balanced by the stacked rifles at right, or the upper portion with the crossed rifle, saber, cannon and anchor evoking the various branches of the military. Any doubt, however, is erased by “UNITED CONFEDERATE/ VETERANS REUNION” around the central disk, which bears an enameled  Confederate battleflag crossed with a Louisiana Pelican flag on the disk, with ”61-65” in raised numerals at top and “New Orleans” in raised letters at bottom, in what is clearly a crescent meant to evoke the state symbol, along with a nesting pelican at bottom center in case anyone was too thick to get the other symbols.

The badge is in very good condition, with some expected wear to the gilt finish on the high points of the brass disk insert from rubbing, the raised edges of the disk, Gordon’s cheeks and forehead, etc., but very good color the flags. We expect there was top pinback bar that likely carried the dates of the reunion and other motifs, from which these elements would have been suspended by a ribbon running through the curved bar at top joining the saber blade and rifle barrel.

This was the 13th annual reunion for the UCV. Among the notable events was the introduction of Stonewall Jackson’s widow to the assembled crowd by UCV National Commander General John B. Gordon. The grand parade on the last day reportedly stretched six miles and took two hours to pass. Among the veterans were Cherokee members of Thomas’s Legion.  [sr][ph:m]
