A very good condition WW2 German Iron Cross, Second Class, complete with ribbon and envelope. The envelope is gray, lettered in black, “Eisernes Kreuz / 2. Klasse / 1939.” The medal itself is complete. The red, white and black ribbon shows no tears or fading. The medal shows an untouched, muted patina to the border. The swastika and 1939 date of the pattern at center and at bottom are very crisp on one side. On the other side the 1813 date is sharp as well. We see some shallow scratches in the right arm of the cross on that side.
The cross is the regulation Maltese (or Formee) Cross made of black enameled iron. The frame is German silver (an alloy,) made in two piece that sandwich the iron core between them and are given a smooth polished edge and finely beaded inner border.
The 1813 date refers to the original adoption of the medal by the Kingdom of Prussia. The 1939 date refers to Hitler’s adoption of it as a pan-German award, though it effectively was one in World War 1 as well. These were awarded for a single act of bravery in the face of the enemy, or actions that were above and beyond the call of duty and were, at least in theory, awarded without regard to rank. When worn, it could be displayed from the second buttonhole of the tunic, as part of a medal bar, or in undress uniform the ribbon alone could be placed in the second buttonhole. [sr][ph:L]
