This "Nazi political" flag was hauled down from the Naples Italy central post office by US sailor Robert Dale Markin; Shipfitter 3rd to 1st Class1942 to 1945. Markin was born in 1921 and died in 2005.

THE FLAG: Is not printed and is of excellent quality. It is made of a wool and cotton blend and measures approximately 9 feet by 4 feet, The greater "field" is red and assembled in two sections running horizontally. In the center is sewn a white disc, also 2 sections, that has a diameter of 34 inches. Upon this is a large black swastika; this is sewn on with arms that are 5 inches wide and having a length of 31 inches across its axis. There are 3 pink ties of about 8 inches in length to facilitate attachment to a pole. The flag exhibits vivid color, and the condition is about mint.

Back in his home state of South Dakota Seaman Markin, on leave late in the war, was featured in a local newspaper article entitled "Sailor Brings Home Nazi Flag" and in the picture used in the article he and his wife are holding this exact flag. Below the picture it reads in part "Here's one Hitler won't fly again. The Nazi emblem flew above the Naples post office...shown above as he speaks to an assembly of Simmons elementary school pupils.". Also, with the flag comes several glossy photographs taken in 1944 and 1945 by Markin that show him with his mates, the destruction of war and naval vessels. Additionally, there are photocopies of Markin's service and discharge records, and George Bush signed memorial to Markin dated 2005. It is special to have a flag of this kind with such accompanying documents. A perfect example.  [pe][ph:L]
