The 9th Army Air Force was organized in 1941 and was one of the first of the US air forces to see action. In the first 3 years of the war, the 9th flew missions with the B-24 Liberator and B-25 Mitchell in support of combat operations in the Mediterranean theater. Initially assisting British efforts in North Africa, the 9th shifted focus as Allied forces made landfall in Sicily and Italy. Upon the invasion of Western Europe in June of 1944, the 9th began providing close air support for troops on the ground as they pushed inland.

This patch is likely English made. It features a wool felt backing with the Air Forces star and wings done in a silver bullion. The circle around the numeral 9 has been done in gold, with the number itself in a polished red thread. The bullion thread is in excellent condition and remains tightly adhered to the felt backing.  [gh][ph:L]
