In 1943 after the bitter fighting at Guadalcanal, the First Marine Division was sent in force for rest and relaxation in Melbourne Australia. The First Division stayed in Australia for several weeks and enjoyed special liberties and freedoms. Many were billeted in civilian homes, which instilled a close bond between the Australian civilians and the visiting USMC. The divisional patch was designed and approved for wear during this period of rest.
This patch is one of these original, private purchase examples of the early 1st Marine Division patch. It is Australian made and bears the red numeral 1 with “Guadalcanal” embroidered vertically atop it. The background is of blue polished muslin and bears the constellation of the Southern Cross. This piece was originally mounted and has since been removed from the jacket. It shows just the right amount of wear for a genuine worn example. This incredible piece of Marine Corps history would make a fine addition to your patch collection. [gh][ph:L]
