Officially this anti-tank weapon was named Raketenpanzerbuchse 54 (Rocket Anti-armor Rifle Model 54) or RPzB54 for short. The weapon was nicknamed and more commonly referred to as the Panzerschreck or TANK FRIGHT.

During the Tunisian Campaign the Germans captured a number of US bazookas. The Germans liked the concept and they developed their own version, the Panzerschreck. The caliber of the rocket was increased to an 8.8cm (3.5 in) compared to the US counterpart of 60mm (2.36 in). The effective range was 150 meters and it weighted 24lbs empty and it could penetrate 230mm (9 inches) of armor. The trigger mechanism was also different from the US bazooka. The Panzerschreck required no batteries. The large handle to the front was the charging handle which moved a spring powered rod forward, cocking the rear trigger. The large handle had a safety button on the inside bottom whose hook would lock to the frame to prevent accidental firing. Once the rear trigger was pressed, the spring would force the rod back pushing on the magneto button causing a charge of electricity to ignite the rocket engine.

This trigger mechanism was found buried in Eastern Europe. The lose rust was removed and it was repainted. There are remnants of oxidation with a half inch on the lower left side of the charging handle missing exposing the safety mechanism. The spring powered rod is frozen forward with the spring missing. The handles are also frozen in place and are not functional. It has been mounted on a wooden base for display

Even with the defects it is a rare original piece of World War Two history and is a great addition to any collection.  [ad] [ph:L]
