This helmet began life as either a Model 1916 or ‘17 helmet. Then, under the Nazis it had a new liner and chinstrap added and a single army eagle decal attached to the left side. These helmets were issued to second line troops and for training.
The helmet is painted a field gray color and shows numerous small scuff marks, chips, and scratches from age. There is one small indentation to the back left of the crown. The same area shows light surface rust. Decal is 99% present with only light surface wear from age and storage. Helmet has “lug” type air vents and a rolled edge.
Interior has the old chin strap attachments on the side skirts while the crown has the World War Two era metal ring with the tan leather liner and drawstring. Liner shows light to moderate wear but is NOT torn or split. Crown shows some light surface rust. Black leather chinstrap is present but the tip and buckle are missing.
The inside left skirt is marked “G62” showing the helmet was manufactured by the company of Gebrueder Gnuechtel A.G. [ad] [ph:L]
