This is a US made M1917 steel helmet used by a member of the 78th Infantry Division.
Nearly identical to the British army helmet, the M1917 and later the M1917A1 were used up to the Second World War, being replaced by the M1 helmet, around 1941. Surplus helmets remained in service however with the US Civil Defense.
This particular helmet remains in fine condition with the 78th Infantry Division insignia painted on the side. The addition of Division insignia to helmets took place in late 1918 or early 1919. Complete with liner and chin strap. Granular finish remains on much of the exterior surface. Some dirt/mud left on also. A name “H.A. Cole” is penciled on the liner strap.
A very nice Division marked WW1 helmet. [jet] [ph:L]
