MINTY WW1 MODEL 1917 US SOLDIER’S HELMET

$200.00 ON HOLD

Quantity Available: 1

Item Code: 1202-109

This is an excellent, unissued condition US World War One helmet. The exterior has the correct olive green, rough finish, the only problem being some dark material from the sweatband of a helmet stacked on top of it still adheres to around the middle. We have not tried to clean it off. It’s a rather nice reminder of the old days when stacks of these, like Civil War Hardee hats might be found in a military surplus shop.

The interior is equally good. The liner with chinstrap and suspension system with net and sweat band is in place and fully intact, even with the small paper instructional label in place at the center reading, “TIGHTEN CORD AND ADJUST NET TO HEAD.”

The shells and liners of these helmets were made by different companies with the parts delivered to a Ford factory in Philadelphia for assembly and painting. The shell manufacturer’s code on the underside of the brim is ZJ213, with number likely indicating being a lot or shipment code and the two letter prefix indicating it was pressed by the Columbian Enameling & Stamping Company of Terra Haute, Indiana. The liners were made several shoe companies. This one is stamped in ink on the cloth lining of the sweatband, “A.E. LITTLE CO. / BOSTON, one of nine known makers, and has the size marking underneath reading “SIZE 7 1/8” though the fraction is slightly blurred.

This is the quintessential Doughboy helmet of the Great War.  [sr] [ph:m/L]
