Golden bronze helmet emblem of 24th Foot., plus Egypt, plus silver lion for service in Egypt. Green interior, cream leather headband, & cream leather chin strap. Color cream white, w/sscattered dots of slight white staining. Else VG & striking.
A fine reproduction of the helmet worn at the Defence of Rorke’s Drift at the Buffalo River in Natal South Africa on January 22, 1879. This legendary fight featured some 150 British troops against 4,000 assegai wielding Zulus of the Undi regiment of the force which had annihilated the British encampment and Isandhlwana earlier that day.
Commanded by Captain John Chard and Lieut. Gonville Bromhead, armed with single shot Martini Henry rifles, the 24th Foot was pressed to the wall in their barricaded encampment. British defenders expended close to 20,000 cartridges in a ten hour fight, during which nearly all had been wounded in one way or another were wounded, with 17 dead. Zulus deaths ran to 500. In the aftermath 11 Victoria Crosses were awarded, the highest number ever awarded to a single regiment in a single engagement.
This engagement featured in the memorable 1964 movie “Zulu”, starring Michael Caine & Stanley Baker.
And excellent memento for “Rorke’s Drift” aficionados. [sr] [ph:L]
