A very good example of the Italian World War One helmet, modeled on the French M1915, but made just two pieces- the bowl and comb- and welded together rather than riveted. This shows some field wear and use but is complete, with strong original gray-green paint and helmet badge for the first regiment. The lining and chinstrap are in place and secure. The chinstrap appears to have been painted to match the helmet.
The paint shows some scratches to the paint and wear spots with the darker oxidized metal underneath showing through, along the edges of the helmet crest, etc. On the wearer’s left however, is a small dent about half way up, and in line with that is a spot on the brim below that looks like something struck it, producing a crack in the metal and a slight fracture of the rolled edge of the brim and scraped the finish. It looks very much like it was struck at an angle by a bullet or shell fragment. [sr] [ph:L]
