Offered here is a M1935 Italian 2-liter canteen made completely of aluminum and covered in soldier “trench art.”
Canteen is complete except for cloth cover and strap which was discarded to enable carving into the aluminum; on both sides!
The front side features more of an artistic scene with a young girl and dog under a large tree and the Sun. Along the right edge is the U.S. Air Corps “winged star” insignia and “AIR-CORP”.
The back side has a large shield-shaped crest, likely some version of an early Linz village crest, in the center. Surrounding that is “To My Mother / MEMOERY OF LINZ-AUSTRIA / JAMES TREIBLE”.
The US 15th Air Force’s final large-scale bombing mission of Linz was on April 25, 1945. Which suggests this is a post-hostilities souvenir. No specific information on James Treible has been uncovered.
From the collection of the Marinos family who owned the Battlefield Military Museum in Gettysburg. [jet] [ph:L]
