The M1904 curry comb was used during the Indian Wars period and into World War I, although the military switched from black leather to russet horse equipment around 1903, which coincided with the adoption of this model.

This featured a flexible back, of two layers of leather, with several rows of serrated metal ridges or "teeth" riveted in place and designed to effectively loosen mud, dirt, and shedding hair from a horse's coat. A 2” wide leather hand strap is attached to the back. This strap features the embossed “US” within an oval, a marking that was so very typical of this and earlier US military eras.

The condition is worn with light surface dirt. Leather is slightly stiff. Metal “combs” are rusty. A fine example of a well-used military curry comb.

In traditional horse grooming, metal curry combs like the M1904 are used with circular motions on the fleshy parts of the horse's body (avoiding the legs and face) to bring dirt and loose hair to the surface.  [jet] [ph:L]
