Exceptional officer’s overseas panzer cap with a very rare panzer division badge hand-sewn to the side! The Model 1938 officer’s gray overseas field cap with silver piping was adopted for wear on December 6, 1938.
This cap was purchased privately from a tailor shop, which is common for officer acquired uniform items. The only marking is a size stamp of “55.” Note the removable pink soutache (colored chevon) worn by troops assigned to the armor branch. The soutache was ordered removed from army overseas caps on July 10, 1942. Interestingly, it was common for many officers and NCOs from elite panzer units to wear a removable soutache, so it could be worn in the field and then removed when in Germany on leave or assignment. That is definitely unit pride!
The best part of this cap is the hand-applied metal badge denoting the 23rd Panzer Division! These divisional badges are rarely seen as they were a field adornment and not regulation insignia. The 23rd Panzer Division was one of the most successful armor units to serve on the Eastern Front. The division entered service on September 21, 1941, and fought exclusively against the Russians, accounting for the destruction of 2,672 Soviet tanks and assault guns. Though little known by American students of World War II, the 23rd Panzer Division amassed an incredible combat record and is considered one of the best German divisions to serve in the war.
Included with the cap are 23rd Panzer Division reunion badges from 1952 and 1961, reunion program and welcome letter from the commanders of the 23rd Panzer Division dated 1952, blank reunion registration form, and articles pertaining to the division.
This is an excellent opportunity to obtain a collector grade panzer cap with a divisional badge attached! Unit identified panzer caps of this quality rarely come on the market – and this one to a division with a stellar combat record fighting the Russians. A wonderful addition to any World War II collection! [sk][ph:L]
