Exceptional and rare unit marked NCO overseas cap for the black panzer uniform! The black overseas field cap was adopted for wear with the black panzer uniform in early 1940. The design was modeled after the standard Enlisted M1934 overseas cap then in service.
Principal markings include a sewn-in owner’s tag with the service member’s last name and his unit: “Claussen” and “2.A.A.5” There are no maker’s markings, depot, or size stamps inside the cap, indicating that it was privately purchased by the owner from a tailor shop. The private purchase origin also accounts for the high quality of the cap (note the quality of the black lining). This cap would have been expensive, so the owner was likely a senior NCO.
The best attribute of this cap is the unit marking. “2.A.A.5” denotes the 2nd Company of Panzer Aufklärungs-Abteilung 5 (Reconnaissance Battalion 5) of the 2nd Panzer Division. This battalion was assigned to the 2nd Panzer Division from 1935 through 1941. The 2nd Company fielded Sd.Kfz. 231 armored cars armed with a 20mm cannon and a coaxial machine gun.
The Model 1934/1940 black panzer enlisted cap entered service on March 27, 1940, just prior to the campaign in France. Period photos show the black overseas cap was worn in 1939, indicating that officers and NCOs purchased privately made caps to match their panzer uniforms prior to the official adoption of the cap. Given the early eagle insignia, this cap dates to 1939 or 1940. Note the pink soutache (colored chevon) worn by troops assigned to the armor branch; this feature was ordered removed from army overseas caps in 1942 – another indicator of manufacture in 1939 – 1940.
This is an excellent opportunity to obtain a collector grade black panzer cap from early in the war! Unit marked panzer caps of this quality rarely come on the market. This cap could have been worn by an NCO in General Heinz Guderian’s vaunted XVIIII Panzer Corps crossing the Meuse River at Sedan in 1940. Guderian spearheaded the advance with the 1st, 2nd, and 10th Panzer Divisions. All-in-all, a wonderful piece of World War II history! [sk][ph:L]
