These machetes were survival and landing force weapons and came in a variety of blade lengths, markings, finish, handle material.
This one has a blade length of 18” with an overall length of 23.5”. This has a rough finish dark blade (they were blackened) and a black plastic handle. The blade is deeply stamped on the reverse side of the blade: “US / [hammer and crown]/ LEGITIMUS / COLLINS & CO / 1943.” The obverse side of the blade still retains a portion of a Collins paper label. The blackening of the blade shows wear, mixing with lighter spots to give an overall dark gray impression with a few scattered thin brown spots. The grip likewise shows some rubbing and light scratches from use. The edge of the blade has been sharpened and has one noticeable nick.
This is housed in an olive-drab canvas scabbard with black ink marking, “U.S.M.C. / S. FROEHLICH CO. INC. / 1943”. Throat pieces and belt hook are in place.
This is a good WW2 USMC machete. [jet] [ph:L]
