This perfectly crystal-clear photograph of a seated Confederate officer is only slightly marred by a three-branched crack in the lower right portion of the plate. The cracks are hair thin with only a small bit of emulsion loss away from the subject, close to the border. The hairline cracks touch the subject’s waist, lap and knee but they in no way distort the image.
The unidentified bearded subject wears a light-colored double-breasted frock coat with captain’s insignia clearly visible on the collar and galloons on his sleeves. He wears matching trousers and is posed holding a knight’s head militia sword in his right hand. At his waist he wears a sash but no belt. His collar insignia, buttons, galloons and sword hilt are touched with gilt paint.
Image has a plain brass matt and stamped brass decorative frame all housed in complete leather case with well repaired hinge. Interior has a beautiful dark blue pillow. [ad] [ph:L]
