US CIVIL WAR BULLSEYE CANTEEN WITH SLING AND NAME ON SPOUT – POSSIBLE 87TH PENNSYLVANIA CONNECTION

$550.00 ON HOLD

Quantity Available: 1

Item Code: 149-39

This canteen is in used, but good condition for its age. The body is covered in brown wool cloth that is soiled and stained from use but shows only two or three small areas where the cloth has worn through. The body of the canteen has the usual concentric rings as found on the bullseye pattern, hence its name. Body is free of major dents.

Pewter spout is nicely marked with “ROHRMAN, PHILAD.” Also scratched into the spout is “A. G. BROWN” and a Masonic compass and square minus the letter “G.” Cork stopper is complete with ring and worn string instead of a chain.

Sling is made of bed ticking material and is heavy soiled, worn and curled. Like most used canteens the sling is tied in a knot to shorten its length. Sling is not broken though some areas are heavily worn down.

Notes with the canteen state that it was purchased at a York County farm sale between Manchester and York Haven, Pennsylvania. The 87th Pennsylvania was raised in that area. -Checking that regiments roster we do find an Alexander Brown whose residence is listed as York County and who enlisted in Company A, 87th Pennsylvania Infantry on September 9, 1861 and was mustered out on October 13, 1864. This is only a possibility. The exact owner may never be known; however, this canteen certainly saw use.  [ad] [ph:L]
