This is one of two muzzle tompions made of corrugated, stamped tinned iron that we have for a US Model 1841 10-Inch Mortar, either siege or seacoast. This comes from the artillery portion of an old and well-respected collection, much of which was purchased from Bannerman’s, the renowned military surplus dealership at a time when it could be obtained from their famous island itself or from their Blue Point Long Island establishment.

Used to seal the bore of the piece and keep it free of water, dirt, or debris when not in use, this is made in two pieces of stamped, tinned iron, the top portion overlapping the bottom slightly, both sections corrugated to strengthen it and using a black-painted iron bolt with carrying or tie-down ring at the top hold them together. This is in very good condition, and stands about 3” tall. The top measures 10-1/2” in diameter and the bottom about 9-3/4.” This surface is largely a faded olive drab or gray with some scattered white spots from rubs and a couple of small spots where the tin was lost and the underlying iron oxidized slightly to brown, mostly just one spot on the bottom, most subject to abrasion. Please see our photos. The top surface has a legible painted caliber designation in faded white reading “10 INCH.”

We also offer two examples of these tompions made of painted wood for the same caliber piece from the same collection. The tinned iron offered some advantages in weight we suppose, but perhaps more in not attracting moisture that might damage the bore of the mortar or cause the tompion to swell and become difficult to remove.  [sr][ph:L]
