Wheel chocks served to stop a wheel from rotating. This is a heavy wood block, triangular in cross section, fitted with an iron-bar handle bolted in place and iron straps with spikes on one side to bite into the dirt and prevent the wheel from pushing it. Gibbon mentions them in his Artillerist’s Manual as especially necessary when horses were hauling carriages- whether gun carriages, caissons or other vehicles- up hill and needed time to breathe and recover their strength, recommending a ten-minute rest every hour.
This is in very good condition, with the iron elements firmly in place and the wood both solid and preserving much of its original dark olive-green paint with only minor rubs to some surfaces and expected wear to corners and edges. Needless to say, this is a scarce, but essential piece of artillery gear for horse-drawn artillery. [sr][ph:m]
