A complete wooden artillery fuze, measuring about 9-1/2” overall, still bearing its labeled cap on the top reading, “5 / SECONDS / TO THE INCH / 1864.” Excellent condition. These are tapered cylinders, showing divisions into inches and tenths of an inch to enable them to be cut or bored through to more finely adjust the burn time. Gibbon describes them in his Artillerist’s Manual, from which we show an excerpt in the listing, noting that they could be somewhat irregular in their burn time, but that they were still used, “for very long ranges, as in sea coast mortars.” We have several to offer from the artillery section of an old and respected collection, much of it acquired in the early 1960s directly from Bannerman’s Island or their Blue Point, Long Island, operation. Please see our photos and check out our other offerings from this collection, which includes many now hard-to-find artillery items. [ss][ph:L]
