This comes from the artillery section of an older collection we are handling, much of which was acquired from the famous Bannerman military surplus operation after it had shut its New York City store down, but was still doing business from its Blue Point Long Island office and from its renowned island. This is a brown-paper pack tied with blue twine that contains two Civil War artillery paper time fuzes and is stamped in ink “15,” indicating the fuzes had a 15-second burn time. Gunners could adjust this by simply cutting the fuze, which was then inserted in a wood fuze plug for insertion in an artillery shell. Gibbon’s Civil War Artillerist’s Manual notes this was a very early method that likely seemed primitive by comparison with more modern, sophisticated fuzing systems, but was reliable and stiil used for long range guns, particularly seacoast mortars. This pack is untouched and in very good condition. [sr][ph:L]
